The Angel of the Countenance of God: Theology and Iconology of Theophanies
by Vladislav Andrejev
  • 2021, 328 pages.
  • The Angel of the Countenance of God will be of value to all who have an interest in iconography, Trinitarian Christology, Sophiology, and Eastern Christianity.
  • Vladislav L. Andrejev was born in St. Petersburg in 1938. After advanced studies in art, his desire to penetrate its true purpose led him on a spiritual journey. During the 1960s he visited remote corners of Russia and Middle Asia in search of spiritual guidance, both at monasteries and at the feet of persecuted hermits-experiences that confirmed for him the inseparability of art and religion. When by 1979 it had become impossible for Andrejev to remain within the framework of the atheistic Soviet regime, he and his family emigrated, first briefly to Europe, then to the United States, where Andrejev could freely express religious ideas in his art and continue his studies of Byzantine and Russian iconography, dogmatic theology, and Church tradition. From 1982 to 1992 he taught Russian Byzantine iconography at the School of Sacred Arts in New York City. After receiving the blessing of Archbishop Peter of the Orthodox Church of America, he founded his school of iconography and iconology, Prosopon, where he continues to teach, sometimes taking private commissions, exhibiting his works, and speaking at international religious art conferences.

Iconology - the Teaching about the Inner Man
Online Lectures with Vladislav Andrejev
May-June, 2021
The Prosopon School is pleased to offer a series of lectures by founder and master iconographer Vladislav Andrejev. The series will explore the foundations of iconology and can be viewed as an iconological catechesis. In the narrowest sense of the word, iconology is the study and interpretation of visual imagery and symbolism. According to Andrejev, it is possible to see the incarnation of the Logos, in man's inner being and in human culture, as an icon. Iconology holds the key to the discernment of the various degrees of this presence of the Logos — and to clarifying the hierarchy of stages which bring man closer to Him.
While iconology is of special interest to students of iconography, it also offers a fresh perspective to those who have never held a paint brush but who have eyes to see. The specific approach of Andrejev’s teaching is to reveal the intrinsic connections between actual everyday life and our most deeply held Christian beliefs. The lectures are appropriate for all students of the Prosopon School, as well as anyone interested in the intersection of art and faith.

Decorative Fabrics In The Mosaics Of Ravenna:
semantics and cultural context

by Julia Matveyeva
  • The mysteries of famous Ravenna mosaics are revealed.
  • 2020, 474 pages.
This monograph deals with various images of textiles present in many plots depicted in Ravenna mosaics of the 5th-7th centuries. It presents an analysis of the iconography and symbolism of the fabrics depicted on the mosaics, which are traditionally interpreted in the relevant literature as decorative motifs. The particular attention paid by mosaic artists to these motifs suggests the importance of the textiles present in mosaics. In order to interpret the textile imagery semantics, the author presents various pieces of evidence that indicate what place different textile items occupied in daily ecclesiastical and secular life during the Late Antiquity period.
